Gospel Singers

We, the Miami University Gospel Singers (MUGS), are committed to proclaiming and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to the campus community and abroad. We are a Spirit-led organization believing in the Christian ideals of praise, worship, service, commitment and love. We seek to enrich our life experiences through creating an atmosphere of fellowship and praise. We strive to become instruments for the Lord, so that in everything we say, do, or sing, God may be glorified. Above all, we seek those who will share their time, energy, passion, voice, and faith with us so that together, “we will bless the Lord at all times and His praise may continually be in our mouths” (Psalms 34:1). The Miami University Gospel Singers (MUGS) was formed by students and faculty members who were seeking to uplift the name of Jesus and spread His good news through the vehicle of song. The choir was established in 1972, and became an officially recognized student organization in 1979. Over 100 voices strong, MUGS was first under the direction of Bill Harris, Miami University’s first black Campus Ministry director, and Rosezelia Patton, the minister of music of Oxford’s Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. During those years, M.U.G.S. grew to be one of the most respected university gospel choirs ministering to students, churches, and community members around the Midwest.
