Sarah M. Stitzlein is Professor of Education at the University of Cincinnati.  She also holds affiliate status in Philosophy and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.  She is editor of the journal Democracy & Education, President of the Ohio Valley Philosophy of Education Society, and Past-President of the John Dewey Society.  As a philosopher of education, she engages in normative political philosophy to identify problems in democracy and craft educational solutions.  She is especially concerned with how humanities-based education can support the political agency of students, their participation in political dissent, and their hope for democracy.

She was commissioned by UNESCO to write about the future of civics education globally and by the National Academy of Education to describe how to improve civic reasoning and dialogue in the United States. As an alumna (BA Philosophy, 2001, M.Ed. Educational Leadership, 2002), she brings those global and national approaches back home to Mother Miami for this talk on the role of the humanities in the future of democracy.

Event sponsored by The Humanities Center, The Menard Family Center for Democracy, and The College of Education, Health, and Society
