Join us for this introduction to a well-traveled ancient Egyptian object in our collections. Donated to the Art Museum in 1978 by Walter I. Farmer (β35) as part of a larger foundational gift of artworks, these column fragments date from the reign of the βhereticβ pharaoh, Akhenaten and belong to the Amarna period of the New Kingdom. πΊβ¨
Depicting an offering scene by the Pharaoh to the sun-deity Aten π, very little information was known about the origins of this object until recently, when it was identified as coming from an archaeological excavation at Amarna, Egypt carried out over a century ago. ππ΅οΈββοΈ
Find out more about this objectβs circuitous journey to RCCAM, and how archival research helped identify its origins. π§©π
