Pedagogical Considerations for Effective Discussions
Facilitators: Lynette Hudiburgh, Statistics and Ellen Yezierski, Center for Teaching Excellence
Planning, executing, and sustaining effective discussions requires a variety of considerations in their design and implementation. In this virtual CTE seminar, we will explore small-group vs. large-group discussions, features of quality discussion prompts, discussion modalities (live/oral, written, video) and how they compare, planning for optimal timing (for discussion, module, and course), how to help students develop discussion skills using corrective feedback, and key assessment considerations such as articulating quality standards, how to grade, and how to use self-, peer-,and teacher-led feedback. Course examples will show how considerations are translated into best practices for discussions in remotely taught courses.
