One City, One Book
"The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics" by Daniel James Brown
In this 90-minute creative nonfiction writing workshop, we will consider how "telling the truth" in nonfiction is a matter of craft as much as ethics. We will consider how creative nonfiction writers, especially memoirists and personal essayists, draw on the techniques of narration that originated in fiction – especially characterization, dialogue, "showing" versus "telling," and metaphor – in order to bring the truth to life. This workshop is part of the city-wide book project and is one of several public sessions being held throughout Hamilton. Dr. Theresa Kulbaga, Associate Professor of English and Languages, Literature, and Writing will be the session presenter.
