Presented by Dr. Kate Rousmaniere, Educational Leadership, Miami University

In 1836, sixty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the first edition of the McGuffey Readers was published in Cincinnati. The Readers had such an impact elevating the nation’s literacy that McGuffey became known as the “Schoolmaster to the Nation.” This Election Day, Dr. Kate Rousmaniere will assess the impact of the Readers on the nation and present a few alternative viewpoints. Following Dr. Rousmaniere’s remarks, there will be audience discussion.

Kate Rousmaniere is a professor in the Dept of Educational Leadership at Miami University. Arriving on the campus in 1992, she has served as Department Chair and Chair of University Senate. Kate is a historian of education who has written extensively on the history of American teachers, teacher unions, and school principals. She wrote the Centennial History of Miami’s School of Education and Allied Professions and was a contributing editor to the bicentennial history of Miami University. Dr. Rousmaniere has served as Mayor of Oxford and currently is an Oxford Township Trustee.

We look forward to seeing you at this special Election Day program.  Please RSVP to Stevie Woolf at <woolfs@miamioh.edu> or 529-1887.
