McGuffey House and Museum’s monthly program will be held at 3 p.m. March 1 in the Auditorium of the Miami University Art Museum, 801 S. Patterson Avenue, Oxford.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Sara Butler. Her talk is titled, Custom Made: Dressmakers and Tailors 1820-1920. In 1820, almost all clothing was custom-made - by an individual for an individual.  By 1920, however, almost all clothing was mass produced. Butler’s talk will describe the custom system for men and women and explore the factors that influenced the move from custom-made clothing to ready-to-wear.

Butler is a retired Professor of Art at Miami where she taught History of Costume for over 20 years.  She is currently on the Board of Trustees of the Butler County Historical Society and is the volunteer curator of the extensive costume collection there. She also serves on the ILR Board and is Vice-Chair of the Curriculum Committee.  Her Ph.D. is from Michigan State University in Textiles and Clothing.

The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact Steve Gordon at 513-377-3818 or Wendy Owens at 513-529-8381.
