MakeHERspace is a DEI-focused maker event offered annually in the Makerspace in King Library. This year's event is in partnership with the Howe Center for Writing Excellence and the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion. The theme of the 2023 MakeHERspace is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories”, following the theme of 2023 Women’s History Month. MakeHERspace celebrates women’s history and equality through educational content woven into making and crafting activities. Participants will have the opportunity to learn such topics as:

  • The history of legitimizing traditionally-female crafting as art forms.
  • Quilting as storytelling throughout history.
  • Expressing their own personal stories through art and craft.
  • Women using collaborative art as a means of sharing stories and supporting each other globally (e.g. The Red Dress Project)

In addition to the educational elements, the event will also provide a space for people of all genders to come together, form community, and de-stress through the process of making.
