Maggie Myers MFA Thesis Exhibition
Artist Statement: I look to the future with a foreshadowing sense of existential angst. Subsequently, I turn to primitive and domestic modes of creation which are ultimately reminiscent of crafting pastimes from my adolescence. My constant and ongoing collection of memes and screencaps of cartoons from this era is linked to a search for myself within this nostalgic imagery. As I transform and mix these appropriated images into “soft paintings,” I think about my own personal experiences in relation to the imagery, which is coded with dark innuendos, sexual undertones and gender stereotypes. Through recollections of my hostile upbringing, I remember my bedroom quite fondly, as it was an escape from my otherwise toxic environment. While I recall this space, I simultaneously evaluate how my values were shaped in my youth and how I aim to challenge internalized belief systems.
