HWAC Reading Group: Combating a Surveillance Culture in Online Learning

This reading and discussion group will read short texts to help them consider issues of surveillance, inequity, and mistrust of students that are magnified in online environments. We will ask together how we can build trust with students to create spaces for deep learning online. We will consider the surveillance aspects of LMS environments, discuss ethical concerns with Turnitin, and consider how to ensure our focus is on equitable and engaged learning rather than policing. Discussions of the same reading will be held on two different days in the week in order to make it easier to attend. Participants are asked to attend all three discussion days in order to build trust and knowledge with other participants.

All sessions will take place online, 11:40AM—1:00PM. We'll send you a Google Calendar Invite after you sign up.

Session 1:  Tuesday, Sept. 15 or Wednesday, Sept. 16

Session 2:  Tuesday, Sept. 29 or Wednesday, Sept 30

Session 3:  Tuesday, Oct. 13 or Wednesday, Oct. 14

Please be advised that each session is capped at 10 attendees.

Update: The Tuesday series is now full. You can still sign up for Tuesday sessions, but you will be added to a waiting list. Spots remain in the Wednesday series!
