DESCRIPTION:Historical Perspectives on a "Golden Time": \n\nOhio Women Arti
 sts in the early 1900s\n\n \n\nWED\, SEP 13 | 5-7:30 PM\n\n \n\n5 PM: Lect
ure by Kimberly Hamlin (James and Beth Lewis Professor of History at Miami
University) This interactive lecture will provide important historical co
ntext for the Museum's exhibition A Golden Time: Turn of the Century Ohio
Women Artists\, allowing viewers to engage more fully with the art and art
ists on display. Dr. Hamlin will focus on women's changing roles in Ohio a
nd beyond in the early 1900s. In addition to women and the arts\, themes w
ill include women and the vote\, women and politics/reform\, women and edu
cation\, and women and family life. \n\n \n\n6 PM: Gallery Talk by Christi
ne Fowler Shearer (Interim director\, Allen County Museum) Women artists o
f the late 19th century and early 20th century were not afforded the same
education and opportunities as their male contemporaries. Becoming a profe
ssional artist was harder for women for many reasons\, including professio
nal training\, exhibit availability\, and societal expectations. Ohio arti
sts Alice Schille and Elizabeth Nourse provide a narrative of two artists
whose careers were similar in some ways\, but very different in others. Th
ey provide an opportunity to explore the many issues women artists faced a
nd the ways in which they could be overcome.\n\n \n\nReception to follow.\
n\n \n\nThis program is in conjunction with current exhibition - A Golden
Time: Turn of the Century Ohio Women Artists\n\n \n\nThis program is suppo
rted by a grant from the MIAMI Women Giving Circle.
