Especially over the past decade, Americans have been engaged in complex and divisive debates about policing in local communities.  In this lecture, Professor Phelps will explore how one American city has engaged in those debates and how the roles and expectations of policing agencies have evolved over time.

Dr. Phelps is an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and author of Minneapolis Reckoning: Race, Violence and the Politics of Policing in America (Princeton University Press, 2024).  Her writings on criminal justice and policing have been featured in numerous national outlets including the Washington Post, the New Yorker, Time Magazine and National Public Radio. Presented by the Department of Sociology and Gerontology with generous support from the Department of Justice & Community Studies and the Menard Family Center for Democracy.
